Emily Berwald, MSN, APN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC

    Psychiatric and Family Nurse Practitioner

I have extensive experience in treating anxiety and depression, as well as a keen understanding of the intersection of mental health and primary care. I also specialize in addiction medication, with a strong background in treating opioid and alcohol use disorders through medication-assisted treatment. Much of my clinical background has been served in the settings of street homeless outreach and shelter-based medicine, a role that has strongly shaped my trauma-informed perspective and overall philosophy of care.

My academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University, and a Master of Science in Nursing from DePaul University. I am a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My post-master training has been focused exclusively in psychiatry, and I possess additional specialty training in the management of substance use disorders.

I look forward to meeting you and accompanying you on your journey toward wellness.

    Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Everyone experiences some form of mental distress throughout their lives, and one must not underestimate the importance of having someone to go to. While talking about your stressors may seem uncomfortable, this is often the first step towards healing. Balancing what life has to offer should not be done alone. Efforts will be made in collaboration to support you in overcoming these difficulties through a strength-based culturally sensitive approach.

I am here to offer more than just clinical expertise… I am here to be your ally in your mental health journey. Together, we will create a safe and supportive space where you can freely express your concerns and work towards healing. We will find what works best for you through a blend of medication management and lifestyle adjustments. My goal is not just to alleviate symptoms, but to empower you to lead a fulfilling life filled with resilience and self-awareness. Let us embark on this journey together, with compassion and understanding guiding every step.

    Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Life can be challenging, but finding a provider who truly listens and takes the time to understand your unique experience shouldn’t be. I offer comprehensive, integrative psychiatric care tailored to meet your specific needs and in partnership with you. My approach centers on creating a safe, non-judgmental space where we can collaborate to develop a personalized treatment plan that supports your journey toward emotional well-being. Medication can be one tool in this process, and my goal is to ensure you feel informed about your options and empowered to make the best decisions for yourself.

As a queer provider, I am especially passionate about supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community as they navigate their identities and experiences. My practice is gender, poly, and kink-affirming. I frequently work with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, suicidality, bipolar disorder, OCD, sleep issues, trauma, PTSD, ADHD, and autism.

You deserve to feel heard, fully informed, and comfortable with your treatment plan every step of the way. I look forward to connecting!

You might be wondering what exactly a DNP-PMHNP is  – here’s the rundown:

Our Psychiatric team at MBC includes Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) who are Board Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) and can assess, diagnose, and deliver care to individuals, families, and groups to assess and treat psychiatric and mental health needs. This means they provide the full range of psychiatric-mental health care across the lifespan and can prescribe medication and administer psychotherapy.

DNP-PMHNPs practice in a variety of diverse settings, including private practice, institutions of higher education, hospital settings, community mental health centers, psychiatric home-care programs, and forensic mental health programs. They also work as members of community-based, intensive case management teams. In addition to working directly with patients and families, DNP-PMHNPs are qualified for leadership roles in healthcare settings. Here at MBC, we believe in the power of Nursing and are proud to be one of the few, if not only, clinics in the Chicagoland Area that is Nurse-led and directed by a PMHNP.

Being a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner requires compassion, sensitivity, and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills. We love that our psychiatric team sees the human being in everyone and knows that a person isn’t defined by their mental health condition. They are deeply curious providers and will meet you where you’re at to start mapping your road to wellness. Make an appointment here or see the groups MBC currently offers here.
